Safety nets vs bird nets
The two look similar but are specified differently. A bird net only has to resist weather and stay taut. A safety net is heavier, with a tighter mesh and a higher breaking strength, and its fixings are set at closer intervals so load is spread around the perimeter.
If your main concern is a small child or a pet on a high floor, ask for the safety specification rather than a standard bird net.
Children and pet safety
Families in Maharashtra's high-rise apartments most often ask for this when a child starts walking, or when a cat is allowed onto the balcony. The net closes the gap between railing and slab above, which is the point most railings leave open.
It also stops toys, clothes and small objects falling to lower floors — a common source of society complaints.
Installation and finish
- Anchors set at close intervals into the slab and side walls, not into the railing alone.
- Stainless steel perimeter wire, tensioned so the net does not billow in wind.
- Net laced continuously rather than tied at intervals, so load is shared.
- Edges finished flush so there is no gap at the corners or below the railing.
Living with a safety net
The net stays outside the railing line in most layouts, so furniture, plants and drying racks can be used as before. Cleaning is straightforward — a soft brush or a rinse from inside is normally enough.
A net is not a substitute for supervision of small children. It is a barrier that reduces risk, and it should be inspected periodically like any other safety fitting.
